Before there were Ford Model T’s on the road or American Airways in the sky, railroads carried passengers from coast to coast. Cleveland Public Library has an amazing collection of resources on railroads, including but not limited to: books and periodicals on the history of railroad companies and unions, annual reports, trade magazines, and photographs.
Cleveland has some interesting railroad connections. In 1910, four of the seven large Ohio railroad systems had terminals in Cleveland. These four systems were: Baltimore and Ohio, Erie, Pennsylvania, and New York Central. According to an estimate based on the U.S. Census of 1910 (Table 1) there were approximately 788 conductors employed in Cleveland in 1915.
Visit the History and Geography Department and take advantage of the Library’s extensive collection of travel guides to help you plan your adventure. The up-to-date collection includes guides by all of the major publishers and includes lesser-known publications such as Lonely Planet, Michelin, Insiders’ Guide, Moon Handbooks, Access Guides, Rick Steves’, Rough Guides, Off the Beaten Path, Eyewitness Travel, Insight Guides, and many more.
Thinking about running with the bulls in Spain? Want to try your luck in Las Vegas or celebrate the New Year in Hong Kong? Planning a family trip to see Niagara Falls, or a meeting with a friend in a sidewalk café in Europe?
For the third consecutive year, the Cleveland Public Library is partnering with the Tri-C Youth Technology Academy to present a Robotics Camp at five library branches: Collinwood, Hough, Rockport, South and Sterling. Enterprising students from Cleveland neighborhoods are building Lego Mindstorm robots over the four week program as a way to spark their interest in science and technology while learning computer programming, engineering, math and teamwork. Robotics as a field of study has grown exponentially in the past ten years. The skills learned at Robotics Camp 2008 will serve the participants for years to come. Although this year's robotics camp is already in full swing, you can prepare for next year by checking out some of the books listed below.
