She will give a brown bag introduction to the awards and 2013 winners: the novels Kind One and The Yellow Birds, the poetry collection My Favorite Warlord, and the nonfiction work Far From the Tree.
Meet Karen R. Long, former Plain Dealer book editor and current manager of the Anisfield-Wolf Book Awards, as we kick off this season’s Brown Bag Book Club. Karen will give an overview of the four 2013 Anisfield-Wolf Book Award winners. We will also raffle off six tickets to the 2013 Anisfield-Wolf Book Awards ceremony. The ceremony takes place on Thursday, September 12 at 6:00 p.m. in the Ohio Theatre of PlayhouseSquare.
A more in-depth discussion of each book will occur weekly beginning Wednesday, September 4 at noon and run each week through the first week of October. Books will be available in the Literature Department for check-out.
Karen R. Long served as book editor of The Plain Dealer for eight years before becoming the manager of the Anisfield-Wolf Book Awards, as a consultant for the Cleveland Foundation. This 78-year old prize, chaired by Dr. Henry Louis Gates, Jr., is the nation’s only juried award for books that confront racism and celebrate diversity. Long is a vice president for the National Book Critics Circle, where she is a judge for its six annual prizes, awarded each March in New York City.
A voracious reader since she wore her cat-eyed glasses to kindergarten in Seattle, Long raised three children in Cleveland Heights with husband Joe Frolik.
Karen will give her talk on the 2nd Floor of the Main Library Building, in the Literature Department.
