Cleveland Public Library Introduces BookBox to Ohio City's Market Square Park - Patrons can pick up a book as they do their weekly shopping

Cleveland Public Library (CPL) is excited to introduce the CPL BookBox to the Market District in Ohio City. The BookBox is located in Market Square Park across the street from the century old West Side Market.

“The CPL BookBox brings some of the wonders of CPL to new patrons right in the heart of one of Cleveland’s most exciting neighborhoods,” said Felton Thomas, Director of CPL. “This is yet another opportunity for CPL to engage the community in new, fun, and creative ways. Our hope is that when people pick up produce from the market, shop for local art, or grab a bite at a bistro, they grab a book from the BookBox as well.”

So, what is the CPL BookBox? It is the next step in the evolution of the ShopBox, a portable and malleable retail concept conceived by Cristian Schmitt, an architect from Santiago, Chile who spent six months in Cleveland developing the concept. A ShopBox hosts temporary commercial or recreational activities in public locations. Its size and modular structure allows for various uses and easy transportation. The CPL BookBox’s design makes it easily recognizable and inviting to passers-by, who can use it to check out a variety of books, including those on favorite Market District topics such as food, cooking, gardening, art, and urban agriculture. The CPL BookBox boasts the convenience of a great location with the same usability as a bricks and mortar library.

The ShopBox concept was made possible by a grant from the Cleveland Foundation’s Creative Fusion program, which supports international artists-in-residence. Creative Fusion’s grant recipients invite artists from across the globe to spend up to a year in Cleveland to participate in community engagement and cultural exchange.

The Creative Fusion grant was the result of efforts by Cleveland TM (Cleveland Teach + Make), comprised of Playhouse Square, Downtown Cleveland Alliance, the Kent State University Cleveland Urban Design Collaborative, and LAND studio. Cleveland TM’s goal is to bridge diverse cultures, expand the collective imagination, and promote global perspectives in the local community through the lens of design. Sponsors of this project include The Cleveland Foundation, Charter One Bank, Cleveland Public Library and Cleveland TM.

The BookBox will be open on Saturdays in Market Square Park from 9:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m.
