MyCloud to Provide Patrons Their Own Personalized Computing Experience

We are proud to announce that in June 2012 we will be the first public library in the country to provide a personalized desktop experience to our patrons using desktop virtualization. The days of saving files on USB flash drives will be over for many CPL patrons, as they will be able to use MyCloud to freely access their own computing world anywhere in the Library. MyCloud will allow each user to save their files, bookmarks, and preferences and have them available anytime they visit the Library.
“The library of the future is one that keeps its commitment to creating communities of learning regardless of whether this means checking out a book, downloading an eBook, or using other technology to access free information,” said Felton Thomas, executive director of Cleveland Public Library. “As a progressive 21st century library, we’re excited that we can provide our patrons with a better, more personalized computing experience built with Citrix XenDesktop, and fight the digital divide that still plagues many in our community.”
CPL has made fighting community deficits like the digital divide and illiteracy a strategic priority, and helps patrons overcome these issues by providing free access to services and programs that help them to dream, create, and grow. MyCloud is one of many free services that CPL offers, and it will give patrons the power to create their own computing world, just as if they were using their own laptop or desktop computers. Patrons can access MyCloud through a desktop-like device called a “thin client,” which will be available anywhere in the library for both collaborative and quiet work experiences. Patrons’ MyCloud virtual desktops will also allow them to use powerful software applications, such as Photoshop and business management applications.
Working with CPL to make this cloud-like world a reality is Citrix, a leader in the world of cloud, collaboration, networking and virtualization technologies. “Citrix XenDesktop technology enables the Cleveland Public Library to be one of the first to offer its patrons a high-performance, customizable virtual desktop dedicated to each individual, giving the user a high-definition experience comparable to having their very own computer,” said John Fanelli, vice president of product marketing, Enterprise Desktops and Applications at Citrix.
CPL is also partnering with HP using its state-of-the-art “Converged Infrastructure.” Earl Graeter, HP account manager, said, “CPL will provide patrons a platform capable of supporting thousands of dedicated virtual desktops.”
As part of its Downtown Destination Campaign, CPL is also transforming its Main Library to improve the overall user experience with several phases of development underway. The first phase includes transforming the lower level of the Louis Stokes Wing into “Tech Central,” where patrons and visitors will find all of the library’s technology in one location. Located here will be the MyCloud thin clients and up to 123 computer workstations that include PCs, Macs, and Linux operating systems. Patrons can also check out tablets, eBook readers, and other technology from Tech Central’s Tech Toolbox.
