12/30/2011 2:11:26 PM
Cleveland Public Library (CPL) will commemorate Martin Luther King, Jr. Day by celebrating its 27th annual event at the Martin L. King, Jr. Branch, located at 1962 Stokes Boulevard. The program is open to the community and will begin at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, January 16, 2012.
This year’s program will feature a discussion about the statue “Stone of Hope”, inspired by Dr. King’s “I Have a Dream” speech. Located on the National Mall in Washington D.C., the new Martin Luther King, Jr. monument has attracted both acclaim and criticism because of its style and imagery as well as its creator, Chinese sculptor Lei Yixin. The Library will host a discussion on the topic of how Dr. King’s legacy and image are portrayed in the monument. Guest speakers include Reverend Hilton O. Smith, from the Design-Build Team and current senior vice-president of Turner Construction; David Deming, sculptor and former president of Cleveland Institute of Art; and Connie Harper, Associate Publisher and Executive Editor of the Call & Post newspaper. Spoken word artist, Basheer Jones, will give the introduction and vocalist, Bertha Picket, will perform. Director Felton Thomas, Jr. will welcome the community as it gathers to celebrate Dr. King’s legacy.
