Cleveland Public Library will host a series of four jazz concerts to mark the 2007 Adult Summer Reading Club. The theme of this year’s summer-long club is “Poetry, Prose, and a Passion for Reading.”
The Adult Summer Reading Club runs from June 15th to August 3rd. To enter the weekly prize drawings adults 18 years or older may pick up, fill out, and submit entry forms at any Cleveland Public Library branch or the Main Library downtown. There will be a Grand Prize Drawing on Friday, August 10th. Participants must read one book or three magazine articles, or listen to one audio book, for each entry submitted.
The four reading club programs and concerts will feature the music of Vince Robinson and the Jazz Poets. The popular Cleveland band will perform on
- Saturday, June 23, at 2 p.m., Eastman Branch, 11602 Lorain Ave.
- Saturday, July 14, at 2 p.m., Fleet Branch, 7224 Broadway Ave.
- Saturday, August 4, at 2 p.m., Glenville Branch, 11900 St. Clair Ave.
- Friday, August 10, at Noon, Eastman Garden at Main Library
Vince Robinson and the Jazz Poets have appeared on WVIZ’s Applause and have performed at numerous venues around Cleveland including the Rock and Rock Hall of Fame, Cleveland State University, the Museum of Contemporary Art, and the Cleveland Museum of Art.
Robinson is a performance poet and arts advocate. He is an active member of the Nia Arts Alliance, an organization that provides mentorship to Cleveland-area students. Robinson hosts JazzPoetry at the Coventry Village Library, a bi-weekly literary event.
Bassist Derrick James is also a member of the jazz group Horns & Things and has opened for several renowned artists including Joe Sample, Freddie Hubbard and Alex Bugnon.
Trumpeter Billy Grinage has worked with Grammy Award-winning saxophonist Willie Smith in addition to performing in ensembles at Case Western Reserve University and Cuyahoga Community College. He studied at the Cleveland Institute of Music.
Drummer Chuck Orange is a studio musician who has performed with Cedric Napoleon of Pieces of a Dream and the Cleveland-based jazz group, Forecast.
Guitarist Nick Moore is a Cleveland-area musician with extensive experience in a variety of music styles and has performed with a number of ensembles and small groups.
