Reading Game 2008During the Cleveland Public Library's Summer Reading Club 2008, the young people of Cleveland read over 73,000 books. Many of the Summer Reading Club's 6400 participants completed the 12 book challenge several times over. On August 16th, the Main Library welcomed several hundred adults and children to celebrate their accomplishments. Children and adults from around the city were treated to local entertainers, refreshments and gaming. The Summer Reading Club is a long-standing tradition at Cleveland Public Library, where cultivating literacy and the enjoyment of books in Cleveland's children is a constant focus.

To stem the rising tide of housing and foreclosure issues in Cleveland and Cuyahoga County, Cleveland Public Library and community organizations are making important information and emergency resources available to Northeast Ohio residents.

Lax implementation of regulations led to the proliferation of predatory lending practices, with the unfortunate result of Cuyahoga County being named among regions with the highest rate of foreclosure nationwide.

Banking is one of Cleveland's most important industries. We've all read news headlines describing its trials and tribulations. The Cleveland Public Library's Business Department has an impressive collection of resources on this industry, a few of these are described below.

The Business Department has sources for bank ratings, TheStreet.Com Ratings Guide to Banks and Thrifts (formerly Weiss Ratings), and LACE Financial Corporation's LACE Quarterly Financial Institution Ratings. The first is a quarterly and gives letter grades from A+ to F. It analyzes U.S. commercial banks, savings banks, and savings and loans. One valuable piece of information the guide provides is total home mortgages as a percentage of total assets.

Oxford Art OnlineTwo of our subscription databases, Grove Art Online and Grove Music Online, have recently been updated and given new names. It is an extensive, authoritative online art resource available with search and browse capabilities. Users can choose to view biographies, subject entries, or images when searching or browsing. This functionality allows users greater access to the more than 23,000 subject entries, 21,000 biographies, 500,000 bibliographic citations, 40,000 image links and 5,000 images contained within Grove Art Online.

Before there were Ford Model T’s on the road or American Airways in the sky, railroads carried passengers from coast to coast. Cleveland Public Library has an amazing collection of resources on railroads, including but not limited to: books and periodicals on the history of railroad companies and unions, annual reports, trade magazines, and photographs.

Cleveland has some interesting railroad connections. In 1910, four of the seven large Ohio railroad systems had terminals in Cleveland. These four systems were: Baltimore and Ohio, Erie, Pennsylvania, and New York Central. According to an estimate based on the U.S. Census of 1910 (Table 1) there were approximately 788 conductors employed in Cleveland in 1915.

roboticsFor the third consecutive year, the Cleveland Public Library is partnering with the Tri-C Youth Technology Academy to present a Robotics Camp at five library branches: Collinwood, Hough, Rockport, South and Sterling.  Enterprising students from Cleveland neighborhoods are building Lego Mindstorm robots over the four week program as a way to spark their interest in science and technology while learning computer programming, engineering, math and teamwork.  Robotics as a field of study has grown exponentially in the past ten years.  The skills learned at Robotics Camp 2008 will serve the participants for years to come.  Although this year's robotics camp is already in full swing, you can prepare for next year by checking out some of the books listed below.

blu-ray emblemStarting July 7th, all CPL branches and the Audio-Video Department will have a collection of Blu-ray Discs for checkout. Blu-ray Discs are the latest in video technology, with the capability to hold five times the information as DVDs. A list of titles in the CPL Blu-ray collection can be found here. Note that these discs will not play in standard DVD players.

The new format uses a blue-violet laser instead, hence the name Blu-ray. This technology will eventually take the place of the current DVDs. The format was developed to enable recording, rewriting and playback of high-definition video (HD), as well as storing large amounts of data. Here is a sample list of Blu-ray disc players.
