86. Chessmen in Hungarian Peasant Costume. Wood, painted in oil: red vs. black with polychrome details. King 3-1/2" H.

Turned carved wood, with richly-painted folk design. King wears a crown and a carved royal mantle, Queen wears a corolla with a painted crown motif and a carved royal mantle. Bishop is a hussar, Knight is a horse's head, and Rook is a castle with four turrets. Red Pawns are girls in native costume with puffed sleeves, wearing corollas; black Pawns are shepherds with pipes, wearing a typical Hungarian shepherd's cloak, known as a "szür."
