67. Chessmen. Wire sculpture: brass vs. copper. King 3-7/8" H.
Copper board: flame-dyed.
Chessmen in standing human forms with rearing horses and towers suggest
medieval army in modern abstract design. Brass side differs from copper
side. Copper side has King with a sword wearing short suit of armor and
crown; Queen with a coronet wearing inverted cone-shaped, long mail armor
skirt; Bishop is a running soldier with sword and round hat. Knight is
a rearing horse, Rook is a round tower with four gates and gallery, topped
by an onion dome.
Gift of William Fahey, 1974.
