63. Chessmen. Silver, enameled and gilt: silver vs. gilt and blue enameled
silver. King 3-1/4" H. Hallmark: Viennese, in use ca. 1835. Matching
board, enameled in blue and grey within a reticulated silver gallery. Black
lacquer box, chamois-lined and fitted for chessmen, with a drawer for chessboard
(not exhibited).
Chess set made for nobility. Each piece is positioned on a reticulated,
foliated standard. King and Queen with crown, Bishop wears tiara embellished
with original owner's monogram "W" in coroneted shield. Knight
is a horse's head, Rook is identified with flowers and bells. Pawns are
crested with leafage.
