23. Shenandoah. Wood: cocobolo vs. rosewood. King 3-1/4" H. Wood board (W): cocobolo and rosewood.

Twenty-third design, the final set in the main series. "... all items, with due regard for proportional sizes have the same kind of base and supporting column ... Only the height of the piece and the shape of its capital differentiates it from other types. King is clearly crowned ... Queen wears a headpiece like those worn in the Middle Ages, but is actually the halo-hat that I earlier had placed first on the girl and then on church officials. Bishop here has a pointed head, suggesting a miter ... clearly differentiated from Knight. The Castle (Rook) with its almost flat top suggests the battlements of a fortress. And Pawn has a simply spherical head. As a whole, the design is sturdy, very pleasing to both hand and eye, very stable, in every aspect playable, and made entirely on the lathe."

Suddenly, his interest in making chess pieces was satisfied.
