[picture of Chessmen with Baluster Motif]
FRENCH; 18th century

Chessmen with Baluster Motif. Hornbeam wood: white maple vs. red maple-tint; with ivory tops, decoration, and pedestals. King 2-1/2" H.

Design represents a widely-used historic and artistic prototype of the 18th century. King and Queen are vase-shaped with baluster shafts and differing crowns, on ivory pedestals and circular bases. Bishop is spherical-shaped with round cardinal's hat, Knight is a horse's head on spherical base, Rook is a round tower with ivory crenelated cornice. Pawns are shafts with round knobs for heads, on spherical bulges over circle bases.
